Role of A Psychotherapist

It is not surprising that the talks around mental health have become louder now that the world is going through a pandemic and its people are quarantined. More and more people are in the process of understanding mental health and want to work towards improving it. Seeking help is being glorified to some extent on social media these days. While you may be willing to seek help, or probably may have identified certain behaviours that may have led you to believe you need depression therapy, it is imperative to understand the universe of psychology and the scope of it.

A psychotherapist is a trained professional who assists people with mental conditions like anxiety, stress, depression, bipolar disorder among various others. There are professionals who are certified for some specializations too. However, in general, therapists help individuals understand and identify their feelings. Once the genuine feelings are out there, your therapist is trained to identify behavio-urs, coping mechanisms and patterns that aren’t good for you. They’re non-judgmental and compassionate. Their listening skills make the individual speak their heart out. They provide emotional insights and valuable advice along with ways to repair emotional damage. While there are different types of therapists specialised in dealing with different problems, they still are and do all the above said things and are more.

Here are some types of therapy:

Individual therapy: Whenever someone says therapy, this is the kind of therapy that first comes in anyone’s mind. Individual therapy is also called ‘talk therapy’ as it includes the therapist and the individual sitting down and talking about thoughts, feelings, and perspectives with the goal of healing and growth. This is the most common form of therapy as people go for individual therapy along with other forms like group therapy or family therapy. Your therapist diagnoses your mental conditions and then suggests the kind of therapy you need. It could be stress management therapy or depression therapy or any other depending on your health. There are various approaches that your therapist can take for treatment. Some of the common ones are cognitive therapy, behaviour therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and narrative therapy.

Group therapy: Group therapy is often recommended by therapists to work on the interpersonal skills of their patients. It involves 8 - 12 individuals along with one to two therapists who conduct sessions with them at the same time. People often wonder repeatedly about the fact that they cannot talk in front of strangers. It is a therapist’s job to keep the conversations fluid. Group therapy actually helps individuals realise the fact that they aren’t alone while suffering. A therapist needs to create an environment conducive to community growth and harmony.

Family therapy: Family therapy comes into the picture when families don’t get along and dinner time talks often turn into squabbles. The social institution of family often forces some individuals to put up through things that they wouldn’t want to. The health of the child is affected the most and child therapy is recommended in such cases. Unresolved individual issues and issues between the parents causes more issues as a family. A psychologist helps understand the complicated family dynamics and identifies various triggers for each member of the family and suggests ways to maintain a cohesive atmosphere at home.
Conclube all.

Two people with different ideologies and different thinking striving to be accommodating of each other’s needs and maintaining a balance in their own. This system of accommodating and acceptance is going to have a little bit of friction leading to minor fights. But what is important, is how the two people make up after the fight and whether they accept and move on from the incident. Sometimes, a fight or a situation can be so gruesome that both or one of the individuals cannot let go of it. That is when they need the help of a relationship advisor who may be a friend close to the family, a family member or a professional who is trained to deal with couples’ issues on a daily basis. This relationship advisor’s main aim is to first...
