Six Reasons Why A Family May Need Family Counseling

An individual’s family is the most important and intimate connection they share with anybody else. Families, however, have their own set of problems, troubles and conflicts that, in some cases, require a family therapist. The key to a successful family is healthy communication, understanding, and balance. Family counseling can help individuals find this balance amongst their family. If you or anybody in your family is considering seeing a family therapist in Mumbai, that itself is an indication that you need it. However, if you are still unsure whether your family needs counseling or are wondering why a family may need counseling, here are a few plausible reasons.

A Blended Family - A blended family is two different families deciding to become one. This may happen when two individuals with their own kids decide to get married. This setting can result in the concept of ‘half siblings. Having ‘stepparents’ or ‘step siblings’ can be hard to acknowledge and adjust to and can cause great disruptions within the family. This is when marriage counseling or family therapy can help the family understand one another and strike a balance that suits everybody’s needs.

Family Disconnection - If you feel like your family doesn’t talk anymore or there’s a sudden drop in communication within the family, then this can indicate an unhealthy pattern. Little to no communication amongst family members is not a good sign and can indicate unhappiness. A family therapist can help members disconnect from their electronics and connect with members within the family to feel like they belong and to restore the love and intimacy within a family.

Withdrawal - It is normal for teenagers to desire privacy or for a member of the family to want to be alone sometimes. However, it is not healthy if an individual prefers to spend all their time alone, locked away in their room, not wanting to share mealtime together or emotionally withdrawing from other members. Withdrawal can indicate depression or other mental health problems that need to be addressed. Family counseling can help with this problem.

Unnecessary Drama - We’re already aware that teenagers experience anger, bursts of emotions, anxiety and restlessness. For the most part, these emotions are age appropriate. However, if these meltdowns and emotional rollercoasters are frequent, they may indicate underlying issues. A family therapist can help your family identify and solve underlying emotional issues.

Addiction - An addiction amongst anybody in the family can have long lasting and severe effects on other members of the family. The consequences of an addict’s actions can be severe, and it can be difficult for members of the family to come to terms with it. Not to mention, dealing with such a person can be exhausting. Family counseling can help a family consider possible intervention and rehabilitation services that the family can benefit from.

Intimacy Issues - Intimacy amongst partners is necessary to maintain closeness and emotional stimulation amongst the couple. If there is a lack of intimacy it can cause partners to become distant and face problems in communication and openness. When couples start facing trouble, they can consult a marriage counselor who can help partners reconnect physically and emotionally.
