UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF A FAMILY THERAPIST IN MUMBAI

Therapy in general is a widely misunderstood and under-studied subject in a country like India. However, at least in bigger cities like Mumbai, people are now at least opening up to the concept and are actively seeking therapy for their various life situations. This has given rise to a number of different forms of therapy as well, including the proliferation of family therapists in Mumbai. Who or what exactly is a family therapist? Let’s understand this concept in greater detail.

Conflicts arise in every family. However, ever so often, things might reach a point where it might create a rift between the otherwise loving family members. Family therapists seek to work with the entire family to help people re-build their relationship with their loved ones from scratch. This is done through group counseling sessions with the entire family. Think of it as just another therapy session, however one that doesn’t just take place with an individual but involves the entire family as well. The aim here is to create a safe space for the entire family to talk about their issues and converse with each other in a non-confrontational way. It is the job of the therapist to ensure that people follow this protocol and communicate in the right way. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how well the therapist can conduct these sessions.

Many people believe that therapy in general is a never-ending process. The reality is that the prime goal of a therapist is to ensure that you can live your life without therapy. Even in the case of a family therapist, they work towards empowering families to live together happily by reforming the bonds between them. Family therapy is fast gaining popularity around the globe and with good reason too.

Sometimes, a fight or a situation can be so gruesome that both or one of the individuals cannot let go of it. That is when they need the help of a relationship advisor who may be a friend close to the family, a family member or a professional who is trained to deal with couples’ issues on a daily basis. This relationship advisor’s main aim is to first...
