The concept and idea of therapy has
undergone a massive overhaul in the past few years. From being a taboo concept
that is approached with suspicion and disdain to slowly becoming an integral
part of people's lives, it has come a long way. However, many people still
regard therapy as something you attend on a personal basis. The concept of
family therapy with a family therapist,
however, is gaining legs in India as well.
The family structure in India is at a
unique crossroads. On the one hand, you have the older generation trying to
hold on to the concept of their children living with them at least until they
get married. On the other hand, you have the younger generation trying hard to
break away and adopt western ideals of wanting to make it on their own. And
this is just one example of the unique generation clash families face today. In
such a scenario, conflicts are bound to arise and the only way out of these is
to talk together constructively, as a family. However, this sort of talk will
be possible only with the help of a qualified therapist.
Family counseling
will ideally include sitting down with all the family members and giving them
the chance to express their viewpoints. The therapist basically regulates the
conversation and ensures that everyone talks in a constructive and productive
manner. The therapist may also suggest better ways for the members of the
family to talk to each other and communicate their problems better. The aim
here is not to engage the family in therapy for a long duration but to
basically give them the tools to function better together as a unit in the
future. Follow up sessions may be required but most families benefit greatly
from such family counselling sessions.
