MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND STUDENTS

With the amount of educational pressure put on students of all ages, there are bound to be repercussions, mental illnesses being one. Poor mental health amongst students is one of the most pressing issues of our society. Over the past decade the number of students experiencing depression and anxiety disorders has increased at an alarming rate. Apart from biological factors, the other reasons that increase the risk of mental health disorders amongst children are educational pressure, learning disabilities, their parents getting divorced, conflicts at home, peer pressure, drug and/or alcohol abuse and so on. Mental health issues affect children’s school and private lives and hinders their growth.

Even though we have come a long way as a nation, talking about mental health is still a taboo in a lot of parts of our society. It is high time we change that. Out of all the children suffering from mental health issues not even a fraction of them get the help they require. Apart from having a counsellor on the staff, every school and college must make students and parents aware of the importance of mental health counseling.

Another common misconception is that therapy and counselling are meant only for patients who have extreme mental disorders. As any mental health professional will tell you, that is clearly not the case. Students can greatly benefit from visiting a counsellor or therapist from time to time. These counsellors are trained at getting students and children to open to them. They then analyses the mental and emotional well-being of their patients and recommend solutions to them.

Your child deserves nothing but the best child psychologist to help him/her through the most crucial parts of their life. The key lies in finding a therapist or psychologist with whom your child feels the most comfortable.
