What Is Couples Therapy?

Definition

Couple therapy is a form of psychological therapy that is used to treat any kind of distress or problems related to marriage and relationships for both individuals and couples.

Purpose of Couple Therapy - Couple therapy is aimed at restoring a healthy level of functioning, communication and understanding amongst couples who experience distress and turbulence in their relationship. There are many reasons that cause distress amongst couples – incompatibility, poor communication, psychological disorders, domestic violence, depression, alcoholism, anxiety or other psychological problems. The primary motive of couple therapy is to figure out the cause of distress in a relationship and to chalk out a treatment plan with defined objectives to eliminate the causes of problems and restore healthy functioning. Couple therapy can also target problems related to intimacy, sexual experiences or insecurities.

Precautions - It is important to remember that you must consult a mental health practitioner who specializes in couple therapy in Mumbai. It is important for clients to remember that you should provide honest and all of the necessary information that the psychologist requires. It is imperative to be patient, cooperate, follow up on and attend sessions on time and have a sincere desire to improve as well as have faith that the psychologist can help your case. It is important to be willing to make a change for your partner and for you and them as a couple.

Aftercare - Remember, treatment takes several months, maybe even longer. Once you and your partner have developed adequate skills to work on your relationship and have improved in terms of functionality and are mutually satisfied, then treatment can be terminated. It is also important to remember that a relapse may occur. In such a situation, it is advisable for couples to return to treatment. Follow up visits with the therapist can be more effective to avoid a relapse. This can be mutually decided amongst the partners and whether or not it will be beneficial.
