Every family has its ups and downs. When
you have a bunch of people living together under one roof day in and day out,
there are bound to be issues that crop up from time to time. Husbands and wives
have problems with each other. Age-gap plays havoc when it comes to the
relationship of a teenager and a parent. In such a scenario, family therapy could
come in very handy in order to rebuild frayed relationships and resolve issues.
Here are some signs that your family might
benefit from therapy. The biggest indication of a possible problem within the
family is the breakdown of communication between family members. This can take
many shapes and forms and there can be a wide variety of reasons for this. But
this sort of a problem is usually observed when two or more family members
refuse to talk to each other. In an Indian context, don’t we all know of
households where certain family members do not communicate at all? On the other
hand, if one of the family members is suffering from depression or some other behavioral
issue, it could be a sign that the entire family will benefit from family
therapy. This is because something like depression affects not just the
individual but spreads outwards and affects their environment as well.
Moreover, the suffering individual also needs an environment that is not
hostile to his or her problem and understands their suffering. Similarly,
teenagers too have specialized therapists these days called therapists for teens.
Even these therapists often recommend
working with the entire family to help teenagers’ function better within their
family. Teenage can be a very isolating time and family therapy is a great way
for teenagers and parents to reconnect and forger a stronger and more effective
bond with each other.
