Families are an amazing unit of society.
They are the first social group we interact with in life and they also form our
stronger support throughout the course of our days. However, when a bunch of
individuals live closely together for any length of time, issues are bound to
crop up. Family therapists believe that
no family is perfect and in fact conflicts are good for the family. They
indicate that people are mindful and vocal about their needs and wants and aren’t
repressing anything. However, if left unchecked, minor tussles and conflicts
can turn into full-fledged feuds, to the point where family members even stop
talking to each other. Let’s understand how therapy can help at this point.
While support groups
are an effective alternative to therapy for most things, something like family
issues calls for a slightly more different approach. As opposed to individual
therapy, family therapy involves the entire family. The idea is to create a
safe space for every member of the family to come and voice their issues. The therapist’s
job is to ensure communication stays smooth and healthy and that every member
of the family gets to put forth their viewpoint. The next step is to work
collectively towards communicating better and being non-threatening while talking
things out. This is a time-consuming process but one which can prove to be well
worth the effort in the long run. Many people also believe that such therapy
can be a never-ending process but in fact the opposite is true. The therapist’s
aim here is to empower the family the work well with each other without the
crutch of therapy. If you feel you are having issues within your family,
consider meeting a family counsellor or therapist.
